Professional, but not posed

One of the things we hear very often from our clients is that they want their headshots to look professional, but not posed. And of course, we agree. Looking professional doesn’t have to mean looking stiff or unnatural. In fact, overly posed headshots do exactly the opposite of what you want them to do. If you look uncomfortable, that discomfort will be communicated to your potential client. Before it even has a chance to form, your connection will be disrupted. Even if someone looking at your photo can’t pinpoint exactly what it is that makes you look uncomfortable, that discomfort will be evident. It will create discomfort in them. And they will be inclined to look elsewhere for the services you could offer them. No one wants to enter into a business relationship that feels somehow uneasy at its core. We’re all looking for people who “get” us, who understand our needs, and who put us at ease. Many of our clients are financial advisors, attorneys and physicians. In all of those professions, clients have to trust you with sensitive personal information. Your advice and expertise could well change the course of their lives. (No pressure or anything.) Of course, potential clients will be more drawn to you if your headshots communicate ease and approachability. That is no less true if the nature of your business is less personal, of course.
